General Information
Phoenica (pronounced 'fenica') is by and large a nation of traders and merchants. As such, business and trade are the central aims of the people which makes for an interesting political situation. The government is run by the Supreme Senate with Senators being elected in staggered succession every three years for terms lasting nine years.
Because the general populace is so bias toward business and profit, the Supreme Senate has largely been reduced to a government figurehead with no real power. In truth, the power really lies with the many giant trade guilds that dot the country. These guilds spar with one another for influence and power in the political arena.
Despite these divisions however, the trade guilds rarely resort to violence and in fact Phoenica is a surprisingly unified country. This comes from the Phoenicans' knowledge that a profit is best made with a larger group of people and therefore splitting apart is in no one's best interest. Also, the Phoenicans are a proud people and very keenly aware of their rich history of trade which serves as a catalyst for patriotism. Don't let this confuse you however, if there is more money to be made trading to foreigners than to fellow Phoenicans, business always comes first.
