REFORMATION-
With growing dangers from the outside and the inside of Arestium, the Arestium Consul and Senate have decided to reform the laws of military selection.
First of all, Arestium's Army was originally made of volunteers and some able-bodied men who were specifically selected. With the growing dangers, Arestium's military force must grow much larger.
The Arestium Consul has decided that the oldest boy of each family shall be trained specifically for combat and so that he may fight in the Arestium Army. At the age of fourteen, his training would officially begin, and the training would end several years later. He would stay in the Army until he was thirty-five years old, and could stay longer, if he wished.
The other male members of a family would also train in combat, but would not be an official part of the Arestium Army. They could, however, be selected at any time, and were responsible for defending their city if attacked. Although they would not train as extensively - they would only train for a third as long as the others - they would at least have decent military training.
Although the new laws will be enforced, the old laws of volunteering shall still be allowed, and will also be highly recommended.
Also, since the army has expanded, more land will be able to be controlled. Therefore, Arestium sends troops to occupy an extra two kilometers of land that is adjacent to the north of Arestium.

With the newer army, Arestium has become much safer for civilians. Although the training of the first-born sons is not complete, first-born sons that have already had combat training are already working in the army. The murder and crime rate has gone to about two-thirds of what it originally was. The new army is prepared to fight any nation that wishes to attack Arestium.
Arestium, wishing to be the most important trade center in the known world, prepares its army for anything. Anything, including the conquest of lands.
Consul Ireneus inspected the troops assembled before him. They were strong, and fearless. They were prepared. He was confident. What nation could stand up against this army? Consul Ireneus didn't think there were any.
Hopefully, the expedition would be successful, and they could start a small colony somewhere else in the world. Perhaps farther to the east. They would slowly establish their power. It would not be too difficult.
The Consul dismissed the troops. They saluted him and returned to the barracks. Perfect troops. Ready whenever they need to be ready.
The Consul was tired. The day had been a long one. He need to rest.
